How To

What is DMD Tag Studio

DMD Tag Studio helps users choose consistent tags and create a simple list to copy into DMD Navigation.

About the system

In DMD Navigation, a place (POI) can belong to only one folder. It can belong to multiple categories and contain several tags. However, one place may be useful for different trips or purposes. This system helps you organize those places around these limitations.

Folders

Folders do not need to follow POI categories. Categories already describe what kind of place a POI is.

Folders can support different workflows and purposes. They can separate new discoveries, imported collections, reviewed places, or places awaiting removal.

One approach is to organize folders around the lifecycle of a place. Imported holds received collections, Inbox holds places awaiting review, and Core holds useful, already reviewed places.

Other approaches may suit different needs. Folders can separate personal and shared collections, or hold places for an active trip.

Categories and Tags

Each POI can belong to only one folder. Tags help connect places across trips and purposes while keeping them in their chosen folder.

Categories describe the type of place, such as Campground or View Point. DMD allows you to assign multiple categories but lets you filter by one category at a time. Tags add details about access, facilities, priority, and your plans.

The same tag can connect places from different categories. For example, purpose-overnight can mark campsites, wild camping spots, and accommodation. This helps you find overnight options together.

Using DMD Tag Studio

  1. Choose a category. Selecting a category shows relevant tag suggestions. Keeping All categories selected allows users to browse and search all tags.
  2. Select relevant tags. Categories describe what a place is. Tags describe its attributes, purpose, priority, and access. Select as many tags as needed, but keep the selection small and useful.
  3. Search for additional tags. Switch to All categories to find tags beyond the category suggestions. Selected tags remain selected when filters change.
  4. Check the selected tags. Remove tags that do not apply or repeat the same information. Add only confirmed details, and record uncertain information in the POI notes.
  5. Review the output. The output updates automatically as tags are selected or removed. Check the list before copying it.
  6. Adjust the output settings if needed. Choose the separator and tag order in the output settings. These settings control how the copied list is formatted.
  7. Copy the tag list. Use the copy button to copy the generated text.
  8. Paste the tags into DMD Navigation. Open the relevant POI and paste the list into its tags field. Save the changes to the POI.
  9. Start the next place. Clear the previous selection before choosing tags for another POI.

Working with the database

The app includes a starter tag database. Users can extend it with their own tags, edit existing tags, or delete tags they do not need.

Adding a tag

  1. Check existing tags first. Search the database to avoid creating a tag with the same meaning.
  2. Create the new tag. Use lowercase words and hyphens. Follow the existing prefix system to keep related tags grouped together.
  3. Add a short description. Explain what the tag means and when it should be used.
  4. Assign relevant categories. Choose the categories where the tag should appear as a suggestion.
  5. Save the tag. The new tag becomes available for selection.

Best practices

Keep tag names consistent and descriptions clear. Reuse the same tag across categories when it describes the same property.

Edit an existing tag when its name or description needs improvement. Before deleting a tag, check whether it is still useful elsewhere.

Changes to the tag database do not update tags already copied into DMD Navigation.

Backing up the database

DMD Tag Studio is free and does not use user accounts or profiles. The current preview uses one shared tag library stored on the server. Changes are visible to everyone using this preview; they are not private to your browser.

Use Export in the top menu to save a backup after adding or changing tags. Keep the exported file somewhere safe on your HDD or cloud service.

Use Import in the top menu to restore a saved backup. Review Merge and Replace carefully, because importing changes the shared library.

Exported files can also be kept on another device or imported into another library.

The database is NOT connected in any way to your DMD Hub locations. Those are 2 independent systems.

Export, Import, and Settings

Export

Export downloads a JSON backup of the complete tag library and output settings. The backup contains tag names, descriptions, and category assignments. It does not contain POIs or the current selection.

Keep the file as a backup or use it to transfer tags to another library.

Import

Import loads a JSON backup. Choose Merge or Replace, then review the preview before confirming.

  • Merge adds new tag names and skips names already in the library. Current output settings remain unchanged.
  • Replace replaces the current library and output settings with those from the backup. It also clears the current selection.

Export the current library before replacing it if a backup is needed.

Settings

The settings icon controls the separator between tags and their output order. Choose a preset separator or enter a custom one. Tags can follow selection order or be sorted alphabetically.

Save the settings to apply the changes. Output settings are stored with the tag library and included in exports.

Use Tag Picker to return to the tool. Your library is saved; your tag selection is temporary.
